23) Shanghai - Good Bye

Unser letzter Tag in Shanghai / China überhaupt. Da auch der heutige Morgen mit Regen aufwartet, können wir uns für das Frühstück Zeit lassen und alles ein bischen gemütlicher angehen. Schon einmal Koffer packen, bevor wir gegen Mittag aufbrechen, ein Besuch der Ausstellung für die Stadtplanung und weitere Entwicklung steht an, welche wir zu Fuss und mit Regenschirm ausgerüstet in etwa 30 Minuten erreichen. Unfassbar, wie die Stadt in den letzten 25 Jahren buchstäblich aus dem Boden geschossen ist, mit allen Verkehrsproblemen die auch andere Städte 

Danach getrauen wir uns, mit der U-Bahn nach Pudong zu wechseln, alles kein Problem, da auch hier alles nebst chinesisch auch in englisch beschriftet, und mit verschiedenen Farben gekennzeichnet ist. 2 Stationen kosten 3 Yuan (ca. 40 Rp.), was im Vergleich zu Taxi oder der Standseilbahn doch erheblich günstiger ist. So schlendern wir noch eine Weile durch die modernen Einkaufs-Zentren um dabei auch die letzten Mails im Apple-Store abzurufen.

Verständlicherweise kommt langsam Wehmut auf, da wir morgen (einmal mehr in aller Frühe) unsere Heimreise antreten. Noch leben wir ein bischen in unserer Traumwelt, mit all den vielen Eindrücken der vergangenen 3 Wochen - Peking, mit dem Platz des Himmlischen Friedens, der verbotenen Stadt, der Besuch der Grossen Mauer - die Reise via Kunming nach Shongdian (Shangri-La) in den Südwesten China's, die Besuche tibetanischer Klöster, der netten Bauernfamilie - unsere Radtouren entlang bilderbuchhaft schönen Landschaften mit ihren Bergen, Flüssen und Tälern, durch kleine Dörfer auf Augenhöhe mit der einheimischen Bevölkerung und der Natur - die Wanderung entlang der Tigersprungschlucht - die Reise via Dali und Kunming bis nach Shanghai, der modernen Metropole südlich des Yangtse Deltas - dies, um nur einige Stationen zu 

Zum Abschluss hat sich Katharina dann nochmals etwas Spezielles einfallen lassen, Mongolesisches Essen, wo feingeschnittenes Fleisch im Hot Pot in einem Gemüsesud gekocht wird (errinert sehr an Fondue Chinoise). Keine Frage, dass auch heute der Besuch in der Captain's Bar nicht fehlen durfte, Zeit für einen letzten Schlummertrunk, Zeit aber auch, um sich von unseren Freunden zu verabschieden, welche uns auf der Tour begleitet haben. 

Bleibt zum Schluss zu danken, einmal China By Bike für die Organisation der Touren, ganz speziell aber Katharina Wenzel, welche uns fachkundig und kompetent mit ihrem "dö dö dö, nege, nege, mai dan" auf der Reise betreut hat (keiner ist verhungert und wir Schweizer haben es 3 Wochen mit einer deutschen Reisegruppe ausgehalten - und wir haben überlebt (ist natürlich nur Spass)!

Liebe Freunde und Leser unseres Blogs, wir hoffen, dass wir euch ein paar wenige Informationen über ein grossartiges Land vermitteln konnten und wer weiss, vielleicht auch ein wenig neugierig gemacht haben, denn eines lässt sich aus unserer Sicht mit Bestimmtheit sagen:

"China ist eine Reise wert !"

Our last morning in China and instead of blue skies it's raining! At least this meant we could have a leisurely breakfast and pack our suitcases before setting off to visit the Shanghai planning and development exhibition. This was our 'free day' so each set off individually to do their own thing. Armed with umbrellas we walked along the pedestrian shopping precinct, repeatedly asked if we wanted to buy bags or watches, 'Rolex, only 200yuan' = Fr 28! The shops were Cartier, Omega and other luxury items stores and the Chinese were out in their thousands. After about 30min we reached the exhibition, which showed the history of the city, as well as the rapid development of the last 25 years along with future projects. Quite fascinating.

Then we felt brave enough to attempt travel on the underground, which was surprisingly easy, all colour coded and names written in English, even the station announcement on the train was in English. Two stations cost 3 yuan, about Fr 0.40, however our intention of visiting the Aquarium was thwarted by the vast numbers of tourists, mostly Chinese, so instead we visited the huge Apple store, to check emails etc, (our hotel being one of the only ones on the entire journey which didn't have wi-fi access!)

Walking slowly back to the hotel, last impressions of our travels flash past. Which bits were the best? Difficult to say, historic Peking, the walk along the Great Wall, the forbidden Temple, Shangri-La, with it's Tibetan folk and houses, the Buddhist temple in Kunming, the historic towns of Dali and Lijiang or the cycle rides through villages and towns, alongside fields and valleys? One thing that will remain with me is the sight of smiling faces. As we cycled past children or elderly people, they looked up at us with astonishment, gave us a huge smile and waved, calling out hallo, hallo. The smiles were anywhere from white to toothless, but each came from the heart.

Our last evening was yet another culinary delight, Mongolian hotpot, with vegetables, tofu and meat all being tipped into the bubbling stock and then fished out with chopsticks (or small ladles). Katharina came up trumps again! Then there was enough time for a last nightcap at the Captain's rooftop bar, so that we could say goodbye to our travel companions of the past 3 weeks.

We'd like to thank everyone for making this such a fantastic journey, China by Bike for the great organisation, especially Katharina Wenzel, who impressed us with her spoken Chinese and her well-founded knowlege of the country and people, and who ensured that we neither starved or lost our way. We'd also like to thank our German travel companions and new-found friends, for putting up with us Swiss and for being patient with my awful High German!
